Dressing an older doll

I made this doll years ago, and then put her into a very simple white dress. I washed it after years of dust etc. and decided to make a new dress for her to wear. Now I just have to find her shoes, lol. But the dress turned out very nice, even if it took me forever to finish it.
I seem to be doing a lot of browns and blues together in different shades. This was not an easy dress to make, but she really looks very pretty in it now that she doesn't have to stand around in her nothingness. What do you think?

The Fashion Frenzy contest in the May Doll Collector mag was a lot of fun. I entered two different gowns for Maria Teresa, because I couldn't decide which I liked better. I was one of five runner ups with the chocolate and teal gown.
So now I can post the pictures. I hope you like her new gowns.

Or something like that. lol. This outfit has been languishing in a box all cut out and waiting to be made up for several years. As it's a one of a kind and my design, I really felt it should be completed.
The green matches her skin tone and the touches of blue and yellow just makes the whole outfit pop.

A cloak, middy bodice, tight skirt and decorated dancers belt are designed for the exotic look, and she was that if nothing else when she came out a few years ago. I'm so glad I took the time to finish this creation.

Lavender air

Strike a pose in lavender, and this would be it. A french fashion lady dressed to the nines, and a trained skirt that goes on forever. I like the dress but I don't like the pattern instructions. They left a lot of confusion in the air, and I finally had to just go for it and try to finish it as best I could. If I ever use this one again, I'll change a few things.

But all in all she looks great, and it's another project finished.

Cissy does Bellydancing

I have wanted to make this outfit for my Cissy for a long time but just didn't have the spare minuet to do it. Well, I got the time and now here it is.
A half circle veil, trimmed out with sequin motifs. Love this plum purple color on her. It's so rich!

The long over-gown is a princess style with a very full skirt, long draped full sleeve gathered at the top and accented with sequin motifs. What's under this?

A decorated bra and dancers belt, trimmed with beaded fringe and sequin motifs. Draped and sparkle fabric harem pants

Even her heels are trimmed out to match.

The costume with the veil. There are all so simple hoop earrings and a detailed necklace to match.

In all a very sexy costume for a pretty doll.

The V&A Back Room collection

It has taken me months to put together just the right kind of lace and fabric to make this gown up for an Tonner American Model doll. This is one of the gowns I viewed in the back room of the Victoria and Albert Museum. It was a dream come true and I knew I wanted to reproduce these gowns as close as I could to what I saw, only in a doll size. I choose the American model, because of her size, and her ability to pose, as well as how pretty she is. My model had a straight ponytail, so one of the first things I had to do was to restyle her hair into a Gibson Girl style.
  This first gown is from 1884, in an iridescent burgundy taffeta, with a black net {not nylon} overlay. That is then hand sewn with black lace motifs. The bottom ruffle, of the skirt {which is separate}, is hand pleated from the same netting. and a black net {nylon}ruffle is laid under this to help create fullness.
  On the underside of the skirt is a dust ruffle with edges pinked with scolloped sheers. The bottom facing only extends less than half way up from the bottom.
  There are several different style laces decorating this bodice and skirt, and I tried to match them as closely as I could. I have paid very strict attention to every detail, and reproduced the gown as closely as I could to what I viewed.
  I hope you like this endeavor , and can perhaps see the likeliness to the original as well as the many hours spent recreating it. Please email me if you have any questions or comments, as I would like to hear what you think.

The purple gown in the book that Alice has been using for her costumes for this little FF doll, was very attractive, and I thought it would be fun to reproduce it for my doll.

This simple blue dress has a square neckline, cap sleeves and a panel front skirt, with 5 gores. A belt around the middle and a pair of tie slippers finishes it.

Marie Teresa now has a new dress, and the time it took to make the scallops was significant. However as a replicate of a gown in the book "The Trousseau Of Blondinette Davranche" {as are most of the gowns produced by Alice Leverett and the Vogue doll co. for this doll} it comes very close even in the fabric design. I also made slippers to match and am working on the little red snood. Always something new to create and play with. Enjoy!

She finally got her dress!

Sometimes I don't get to a doll as fast as I might like, so she has to wait for something to wear. This dress is made up from a Jackie Chimpky pattern. Now she has a dress she won't be satisfied, but at least she has something to wear while she waits for the next one.

This doll is also created by Jackie. Isn't she pretty?

Well she got a bit more then just the nightgown. She also got a robe and nightcap. However somehow I don't think it will end there.
This little doll has been a lot of fun dressing, and I hope to create more for her in the future. But for now I think she wants to sleep.

It's Purple and Gold!

Royal colors for a beautiful girl. Aeianna looks wonderful in this french fashion inspired gown. She also has a new full set of underwear to go with this style gown. The bodice, sleeves, and underskirt are all one piece. The jacket has one closure at the front. The overskirt is separate and can be worn with the dress or without.
I'm glad I finally got this finished. So is she {although she did mention something about a nightgown and robe..... are they every satisfied?} The beaded trimmings were a long strip.

The sleigh ride gown

I didn't get any really good pictures until yesterday when I took the sleigh and horses and Arianna outside to take the pictures in the snow. It is really beginning to melt down out there and yesterday was the first sunny day for some while. So here are pictures of that gown for my 22" BJD. Her first creation, and I'm working on finishing up on the second one now. I'll post it s soon as I can get finished.
So how does she look?

On this last picture the horses and the sleigh sank down into the snow, and for some reason Aeianna didn't. So she seems really tall next to them. At least you can see the gown better than in a pile of clothes.

A new dress

This porcelain doll I made back in the 80's when I was doing reproduction dolls. I had dressed her in gold brocade and red velvet, but after 20 years of dust etc I tried to clean the dress and bonnet,to no avail. It was unusable, as were the dresses for three other dolls. So in time I did redress one of the French Fashion dolls. This little girl was still without, and it was time to do something about it. So choosing a peachy pink brocade and a satin to match I also chose a new dress design.
At long last she has new underwear, of drawers and slip and the dress of satin. The jacket and bonnet are of the brocade, with hand made trimmings. This whole outfit took me a couple of weeks to complete, but doesn't she look beautiful. I love the way it all turned out, even with the hours of hand work to make the trimmings.

One more to dress, and then I have to replace a broken head before I can finish the other one. I think it pays to take ones time.

Playing dolls

Sometimes I just have to play dolls for the sheer fun of it, and to get away from the craziness coming from on line. This tiny little baby just makes me want to giggle. So I added to her wardrobe by about five little outfits. This is just play, and how I enjoy my dolls, and doll dressing. I don't always dress to the nines, as it were.
Isn't she a little cutie?

And here she is all ready for Christmas, in her little wine red and green print dress, panties and bonnet. She deserves a wardrobe, with that smile.

The brick patio

I can't believe I got this much done, but all I have left is to spread some sand wash it down and the playhouse patio is done.
Doesn't it look great? I can't imagine any little girl not wanting to play dolls down there and have a tea party on the patio. I know I would. How about you?

The Richness of Mink

I really love the way this looks. It looks so much better then fake fur.
Pink baby wale corduroy, silver-gray silk, and a silver blond mink makes this combination to die for. She has a simple silver gray bodice to wear with the skirt when she is not outside teasing the snowflakes to play with her as she glides through the snow in her winter ensemble. Overskirt, jacket, muff, and hat complete the outfit. The bright brass buttons are center front, sleeve and center lower back of the jacket. I love the mink!

It's only taken 50 years!

But at last I have my playhouse. OK so I can't get inside, but my dolls can. When I was a little girl I wanted a playhouse, but never got one. So this is to let all you ladies know it's ok to have what you never got as a child. Even, if, it's a playhouse.
  I intend to pose my dolls there. I still have lots of work to do... like putting the bricks back into a patio, and trying to get some grass to grow around it. I will also be putting plexy glass in the windows {to keep the weather out not to mention the bugs etc.} and paint the inside and varnish the outside to protect it.
  I will also get a large cover {like the kind used on outside tables etc.} to cover it in winter. I am going to make curtains and use some of my larger sized doll furniture inside. That is of course, after it's been painted etc.
  The toadstools are little seats, and the mushroom is a birdbath. I have solar lights that will turn on at night to mark where the playhouse is. The weeping pussy willow will look so grand nearby and I intend to remake the Thyme garden in the circle you see. The little pink rose bush is called {and most appropriately} "Playhouse". Yes, thats the name of the rose! Isn't that to cute? I know I will be adding more goodies later on. Like on the backside of that tree, behind the house, will be a fairy door. Do you think the fairies will move in?
  But for now what do you think? Won't the dolls have a grand time?

Blue Steel

  The blue color in the eyelet of this fabric is a steel color. So I called this gown Blue Steel. The eyelet is not like anything I've seen before, and it comes from France which maybe why I've not seen anything like it. The gown made up just lovely with this fabric although I couldn't find any ribbon to match that blue steel color and had to make it from a piece of fabric I stumbled across that was the right color. It turned out really nice. The under sleeves are something new and I've not seen this before either.
  All of the fabric used for this gown is from that one piece of eyelet, except where there is the blue color fabric I used for bands, under sleeves, and the bow on the hat. The hat is a hand sewn straw, decorated with a ruffle {from the eyelet fabric} and a bow of steel blue fabric. One little bunch of the right colored blue flowers trims the brim.
  In all, this was a fairly simple gown to make. It will also make a great pattern to work with.

Lavender Delight

This is with out doubt the most beautiful evening gown I have ever made. Iridescent lavender taffeta is the foundation piece of fabric the rest was built around. An wonderful piece of "special" lavender fabric with metallic gold threads outlining the embroidery design adds that touch of glitz yet doesn't make it "over the top".
The gown is lined with a light lavender voile. Beautiful gold braid, and gold lace that has deep purple satin and/or velvet ribbon threaded through the beading draws attention back to the gold thread outlines.
A wired satin edged ribbon adds an accented ruffled on the bottom of the three skirts. Lavender and purple flowers complete this beautiful design. An variegated lander to purple wired ribbon added as bows complements the flowers. Flowers and a bow are just the right touch for the hair. I have as yet to make the jewelry to go with this gown but will do so next. I just had to get pictures up so you could see she is going to a ball and dressed to the nines.

Copper Fashion

  One of my favorite colors is copper. I have never found a prettier shade then this. When I bought this fabric I didn't know which doll I would dress in this color. My French Fashion is so pretty I am very glad to have chosen her.
  To go with the copper silk fabric I needed something to accent it and found this beautiful plaid silk taffeta fabric. Lined with a deep red tone lining and trimmed with the beaded golden yellow ribbon, and the light orange twisted ribbon they each make a wonderful accent to the copper silk. The hand sewn straw bonnet is trimmed with tiny flowers, orange feathers and hat veiling and copper colored satin ribbon.
  I really like the way this turned out and is such a beautiful design for a french fashion doll. She has a completely new set of under garments done in yellow voile and a pretty yellow print. The petticoat is white voile and lace with a yellow ribbon trim. She also wears a white stiff bustle trimmed with yellow ribbon. Who says it has to be gold or silver to look rich?

Twelve Inch French Fashion doll

Sometimes, even in the middle of major work, I have to just take the time to play. I didn't play all day everyday, sometimes only an hour or so, but I have learned to take time to do something I enjoy everyday, despite all the work load.
I have been working on this gown for my 12" French Fashion doll for about two weeks on and off. I finished the new gown today. I had to do a lot of adjusting on the pattern, but now that I know what to do, it will be a good basic pattern to develop others from.
The fabric I bought from someone and I don't remember who as it's been so long, but it is a beautiful tiny print in pinks and purples
I used organdy ribbon and silk/satin ribbon to trim the gown. There is a long sleeved bodice that the skirts are attached to and the jacket is removable. The bonnet is hand sewn and decorated with tiny pink and purple roses, and pink/purple feathers. A little satin bow and organdy ribbon ties finish the ensemble.

These gowns take a long time to create in the style from a century ago, with all the hand work, but it makes them more "correct".

Missing out

  Well, some times nature just does it's thing and you have to view spring with a runny nose. I caught a cold, and am missing out on my planned trip to Portland, but I will make up for it by designing a new gown for my 12" French Fashion doll. Something lovely of course.
  I made up some straw hats to sell while I was out there but, now I guess I'll let you'll see them and if your interested you can email me about them. I'll put up pictures as soon as I can. In the mean time I am trying to rest and take cold meds and get over this. Of all the times for it to hit me.
  Well, so much for natures way of telling you to slow down. Gee I thought I was already slow? lol. Back to you soon with a new gown design.

Play time

I decided to play. So I designed this gown for my 12" FF doll I loved the fabric and with the wonderful little trim added along the overskirt drape,and a touch of bows and flowers, it's richness is to die for.
I created the bonnet first by hand sewing the straw, then added the flowers and ribbons.
Next I drew the patterns out for the jacket with 3 split openings in the back of the jacket at the bottom of the princess seams and opening up where the center back is. I added triangles of pink fabric to the seam openings. The whole bodice, overskirt and underskirt are completely lined. It's the only way to deal with fabric that tends to fray a bit.
I love the chocolate brown and pink colors, and think they go well together. Very victorian.
I hope you enjoy this creation it is the first after a long dry spell.

Summer rundown

I am so sorry to be away for so long, but.... and this is a big but. I am having a craft room built onto the back door entrance of my house. At last, I will have a room for all the hundred and one things I make and do. It will be started on very soon now, so all this time of hauling and sorting and throwing away, will prove to be very worth wile.

For the next month or so, things are going to escalate. Then I should be able to "move in".

It will more then likely take , most of the winter to "settle in", but I am so looking forward to it.

As soon as I can I'll be back to sewing and working on all those dolls standing in a line demanding new clothes.

I hope your summer is going just as well, or better then mine.

I have not seen a doll as beautiful as this one for a long time. I can't see how they could possibly make her "better" in any way. I have been waiting for a redhead, and when I saw this one, I wanted her with a capital W. I am so glad I got her, and now can't wait to begin designing and making her clothes. I already pulled a lot of fabric in the expectation of her arriving home. Now, I shall get out the drawing pad and start the process of turning the fabric into gowns. I will post them as soon as I can complete something.

In the mean time, I did bring home a couple of her outfits, and as always Tonner does a bit of fairy goth magic and gives Evangeline not just something to wear but something to show off her own unique self. You won't be disappointed in anything he makes for her, this go-round.

I shall be waiting for more shoes! lol.. what else?

Another wedding gown

This wedding gown fits Cissy, and is so elaborate, that you can't help but see it, and admire it.

With it's own jewelry set , of a crown, necklace, earrings, ring, pin and 2 bracelets bracelets.

The dress is complete all in one piece with underskirt, overskirt drapes and train all sewn to the bodice. The sleeves are toward the more medieval side of the time line. On a whole she looks regal and of royalty. At the least she is a nobly born lady.

Wedding White

This wedding gown done in the 1840's style is close to what Queen Victoria wore on her wedding day. Made from white satin with a beautiful bridal lace along the bottom of the skirt {made separately}. Her overskirt/train is from my own wedding gown train. It's made from a very thin fabric but I don't remember what it was we bought to make my train over skirt from. Her bodice has a bertha style collar that is covered with the same design bridal lace that is also gracing the bottom of the bodice and a smaller version of what is on the skirt.

The drapes on the over skirt are held back with pieces of the same lace. It also backs the white roses and white flowers in her bouquet and her headdress.

The Velveteen Bonnet

Instead of waiting on black straw, I decided to make a black velveteen bonnet. It matches the black velvet pelerine. There is also a matching black velvet bag. This completes the black velvet set.

Next on the list for now and it will be the last as Monday I shall be starting on something new.

Her name is Evangeline.

But before I get to her, I shall make a wedding gown for Electra.

A simple white dress

This gown is made of fine white lawn, and trimmed very simply with pale yellow embroidery in a chain stitch. It's a carriage dress with shirring across the bodice in the front. Simple but elegant. It's from the 1840's to 1845 time frame.

Black is black

This gown turned into an involved bit of work. Black flocked see thru fabric over black taffeta, with black velveteen bodice and trimmings. I did a lot of beading over the front of the bodice and as trimmings on the petals over the sleeves. It's a visiting dress with it's own Pelerine trimmed out with black lace. The same black lace trims the bottom of the dress. I like the way it turned out and will make a bonnet to match when I can get black straw.

Otherwise it's fine as is.

Pale yellow turns Gold

This silk has a wonderful sheen to it, so I used an embroidered chiffon for the overskirt. This evening dress comes complete with a hat. Something that they use to do back then and may seem strange now. A bit of beadwork and it's done. I hope you like it as much I liked how it turned out.

A bonnet to match

This is a ribbon Pelerine, to be worn over the plain pink dress that was under the flowered print.

I also made a matching bag from the same ribbon.

Then I decided to make a straw bonnet to go with this ensemble. Hand sewn and then decorated with hat veiling, flowers and some ribbon, all to match the rest of the collection but still be able to be worn with something else.

Rose pink print

Who said a redhead couldn't wear pink? I used a very wide rose pink lace to line the collar and drape on bodice. Then I used a deep hunter green velvet ribbon for the leaf shapes, and a power blue ribbon bow. For some reason these little touch really bring out the blue in her eyes.

This is called a morning dress. The print morning dress is worn over a rosy pink plain dress. This dress can be worn with other items of clothing such as a ribbon Pelerine, or lace collar and cuffs. Both the print morning dress and the plain pink dress are made up of a fine cotton lawn.

Moving on!

Here is thew first of the 1830's styles. This mint green dress is made of a fine lawn fabric, with a tulle and lace trim. It can be worn plain or with the tulle and lace apron.

The 1830's styles have very wide sleeves, and full skirts. Many variations with just these factors, created many different style. This one is an afternoon dress. All the undergarments are of a pale ecru and are pretty much like the last 10 years undergarments. Except the skirts are a lot fuller. The nightgown and wrapper, are very much the same design, also.

So now she has two full sets of undergarments. The corset being the only piece that is different, and it doesn't have the shoulder straps. It's completely strapless, and decorated with a wide ecru lace. The same lace decorates the nightgown and wrapper, lending them a bit different air. All of the sleeve designs, long or short, are full. It seems this mint green hue has changed her eyes a different shape of blue.

It's getting filled up!

Here is Electra's wardrobe, and it's beginning to get filled up. These gowns are all 1820's style gowns. And this was the last of this era for now.

I shall work on 1830's for awhile, or perhaps work on a different doll for a bit.

Pink and cream

This gown was a lot of work, as each little poof was hand gathered and sewn down. The gown is cream colored taffeta. The tie belt, hat, muff and pelerine are pink velveteen. This is a dinner dress, and as she might be going out to dinner at friends I added the hat, muff and pelerine in a rosy pink tone.

Around the bottom of the skirt is a wide band of lovely lace, bordered on both sides with the little poofs. The hat and muff are trimmed with pink feather boa's. I really like the gown and it's endless little poofs. Something we would not do today, but I still like it here.

A dress for the Day

This dress is called a day dress, one would wear it during the day at home. It has some very interesting design elements to it. The front of the bodice is gathered, and it also has a white cotton lawn collar attached. There are two triangular shapes for each sleeve called jockeys. {Don't ask cause I don't know this one... lol} She has a ruffle of matching lace at the bottom with a hand dyed velvet ribbon trim just above it. A belt trim of the same velvet ribbon, and a matching bow tie at the neckline of a hand dyed wide satin ribbon.

This shade of blue turns her eyes another shade to match, as well.

Skirt and blouse

This was the earliest version of the skirt and blouse. Made from a fine cotton lawn the white blouse has pin tucks front and back. At the neckline are two rows of gathered lace. The long full sleeve gather at the wrists, into cuffs.

The skirt is a pretty yellow flower print on white cotton, and along the top of the upper most ruffle is sewn a yellow silk ribbon, The yellow silk scarf match it in just the right hue.

Considered a walking dress, it was light and airy, and unrestrictive.

Underthings

Here is my lady in her chemise and drawers. All of her under garments are made from white cotton in varying thickness. Next is her corset. This one was very different from others I've made but very much like the Elizabethan corsets I've seen and made for myself.

Her petticoats are fairly simple and not heavily decorated as other eras were.

I keep forgetting to take pictures of her under things and her nightgown and housecoat, so tonight after finishing the peachy pink gown I took the time to add pictures of these.

Nightgown and Wrapper

This nightgown was very interesting to make, as it is the first one I've made that could be truly termed from "neck to hem". Made from a very soft fine white cotton, it would be very nice to sleep in, and I think she thinks so too.

The "wrapper" which is what they call the housecoat back then, is made from soft but heavier white cotton. This also made up in an interesting way as it only goes to the lace line on the nightgown. That is where the upper piece is set in, and does not happen on the wrapper.

The last piece of this ensemble is the nightcap. One can't but wonder ... "Did they really wear those back then?" But I'm sure they would wonder the same of us with our hair curlers and caps.

{The picture with the bow at the waist is the housecoat, and the other two are the nightgown. It's hard to tell these apart.}

Is it peach or pink?

How about peachy pink? lol I loved the color of this fabric and I think she looks great in it.

This is a visiting dress, and while she has a fancy beaded necklace, and beading trim on her hair ribbon, I don't think it's to much. She doesn't have to wear the necklace but I think it adds a bit of sparkle to her attire. The gown is made of taffeta, with an organdy over skirt, sleeves and collar. The lace trim has the same peachy pink color woven into it's design.

The necklace is hand beaded onto a colored ribbon that matches the ribbon belt in a wider width. There is one wide tuck and the bottom of the overskirt with the lace just peaking out from under it. In all a lovely gown, and another wonderful piece to add to her wardrobe. Don't you agree?

A house dress?

This blue print cotton house dress is worn over a plain white cotton underdress. This will allow for additional dresses to be worn over the white underdress. She also has a lovely village bonnet to go with the blue overdress, allowing for an outing or just to take a stroll through the garden.

The fine voile cotton print is a lovely shade of royal blue on white. The gown is decorated with hand died silk ribbon, and white edged lace .

The bonnet has artificial flowers, more of the ribbon and some royal blue hat veiling, to finish off the trimmings.

Aubergine Pelisse

This is called a Pelisse Dress or Robe. The style was very popular in the 1820's and so I decided to make one up in a royal purple crinkle like mixed blend. It's lined , and overlaps in the front. The edges of the gown are trimmed with a beaded appliqué in a long narrow design, and of a lighter purple color. The Color was called Aubergine, and that is a french word for eggplant.

She has detachable collar and cuffs of a fine Bordeaux Angeles. She also wears a bonnet trimmed inside the brim of the same beautiful white lace. The bonnet is finished with a trimming of ribbons, feathers in a lighter purple hue, and the beaded applique used down the front of the gown and around the bottom hem. There is also the very long shawl of deep purple lace.

This is a lovely shade of green silk, with a matching net and trimmings. I have had this collection of fabric sense the last miniature show I went to years ago. The gown is an evening dress in the same era as I have been working in, the 1820's. The bottom of the gown was often gathered and puffed like this and trimmed out in different ways to accent the design. It made the bottom of the gown "stand" in a circle around the body, from the stiffness of all the gathered fabric or net etc. So on to the next gown.

This tall red head is made by Kish. I have been wanting to make her some clothes for some time, and had never gotten around to it till now.

This first gown is in pale blue satin trimmed with pearls and aurora borealis beaded trim. The gown's design is an 1820's Fancy Ball dress. An elaborate creation of make believe fancy, created for the dance floor of a ball.

It really brings out the color of her blue eyes.

Yellow Silk

This yellow silk, trimmed in an ecru colored lace. A tiny matching yellow ribbon trims the top of the lace where it's gathered. Simple yet elegant.

This pink gown is very simple except for the timings. A pouffy over skirt of white lace. Lots of satin ribbon with rose print, and many, many dark pink ribbon bows. There is a gathered band of lace above the ribbon trim. While very simple, it still holds a fair amount of charm.

She is so happy. She now has a play outfit. Rompers that tie at the neck, in an old fashion vintage print makes up into the cutest little set. She has a bonnet to match to keep the sun off of her face and head,

Then when it cools off in the evening, she has a tiny little blue sweater. Nothing is as cute as a baby at play. I think now I have to make her a tiny stuffed Raggedy Ann doll. She needs toys to play with.

I love sewing for little dolls, and this little one is the sweetest doll yet. She makes me smile whenever I look at her. So she got a new dress, slip, bonnet, and panties. And they are made from an vintage baby gown. The cotton is so fine you can see through it, and the tiny little embroidery is the sweetest little rosebuds. I hate cutting up vintage pieces but, there comes a time to let go and just do it. So this little one got a vintage gown and ensemble out of it. It fits her perfectly even if all she wants to do is play. That means it's time to make her play clothes and keep this for special events.

Blue is Stylish

This is a French Fashion design called Worth Chateau Toilette for the year 1892.

The skirt hitches up on one side, and is shorter there. Otherwise their is a petticoat underneath, that peaks out on the side.

I used a deep blue to make up this gown. There is a train in the back. The lovely hat has a long veil, and flower and berry decoration. Again there is an underdress, and an overdress.

A bit involved, but then what French Fashion wasn't?

Here it is. And I choose red for the color to make up this French Fashion design. A beautiful blood red, with red silk for the underdress, and red silk lining. Trimmed with a lovely raised design lace, hand dyed silk velvet ribbon and lovely red roses to finish the creation instead of the 3 leaved design.

The overdress is red satin covered with a red heart motif net. Two additional red laces finish trimming the edges. A large hand dyed red silk ribbon ties the overdress closed.

The sleeves are gathers at two places to form poofs and finish in an under-point for a slightly medieval look.

There is a demi train to the underskirt and a fullness in the back overskirt. The ensemble is finished with a perky little hat pinned at an angle to show off the curling red feather, and roses. Equal amounts of the different laces finish off the trimmings.

This gown, now completed, is a close representation of the picture. I think it suits her very well, and I don't think I could have found anything better for her to wear.

French Fashion Bru

This lady is about 18" tall and has painted eyes. I made her back in 1982 when I was making porcelain dolls. Fashion ladies were and still are my favorites. I don't think she was ever dressed. And now I have taken the time to make her a gown befitting her style. These are her under clothes {chemise, corset, drawers and petticoat}. I have drawn the patterns for all of these as well as for her gown.

She also got a new wig which looks so much better on her and shows off her features much better. Her body is a simple cloth body, that I re-stuffed because of settling stuffing. The elastic holding her head in place was also stretched out and had to be replaced. Now, for her new gown.

The cat has moved to an Edwardian period and now wears a pink gown that gathers in the front, and has a drape over the hips that ties at the back, with ends forming a train. Tiny pink rosebuds make up the cotton fabric print, with pink silk drapes. The skirt back forms a rounded train, drape. She is just as pretty in pink as she was in green.

Her dress is completely removable as is her fancy white wig. I will be making a bit more for her so this isn't the last you will see of this cat. I don't have a name for her. She is just called the Aubergine Cat.

New Gibson gown

This gown {actually a skirt and blouse} is a simple design. The skirt made from a flowered cotton print in a simple gored design.
The blouse is a cream colored silk with pin tucks and lace bands. The stand up collar is basic Gibson fare. All in all very straight forward in concept and design. The large chain link belt is in place of something fancier, but unattainable. I think it works very nicely.

Well this one isn't like the others. I decided to do one that was of another period, and this certainly is. It just goes to show you can do anything with these paper dolls.

A Marie Antoinette style known as the " Watteau" style was a later period style. It hangs

I used red wired ribbon and red mink fur for this one. She has a nice little shrug that is fur trimmed around the neck edge. Paper dolls can be treated pretty much like a real doll only she's flat not 3 dimensional. I didn't realize this could be done with a paper doll until now. But look at this style and unless I told you I don't think you would know she was flat.

Spool Quilt

This quilt pattern is call a spool, because it is a bunch of thread spools.

I had a lot of problems with it, and it's not perfect, but then neither am I.

It measures 61/2" x 51/4". I do not want to do another one. lol. For the most part I like this one, and it would be a lot better if it was a bit bigger, but we were making miniature quilts. So there you have it.

Well, she's ready for the prom in her new gown.

Made from paper and wired ribbon the gown goes all the way around to the back.

The under skirt,{ sewn on the machine, into pleats} is made of a specialty paper from Japan. The overdress is of yellow tissue paper. Wired ribbon accents the top and keeps the dress up and closed in the back.

Perhaps more plain then I had wanted except for the all around look.

Box in it's finished state before it is decorated. Both lids are in place. The shorter lid on the right folds in first, then the lid on the left folds over that. It will have ties to hold it closed after it is decorated. I plan on using scrapbook paper.

Here is a very simple how to on the box. You will have to square up the shape, so all sides are even when folded up at the corners. Please follow the pictures, use making tape to hold folds in place and to hold both lids in place.

Use a metal ruler to make the folds for the sides and the lid flap. You will have to square up the shape and sides so everything will be even. Make sure the sides match when you fold them over the ends.

If I never see another pleat again, I will be happy. This blue cotton print was turned into real elegance with the addition of the pink crinkled satiny fabric. Yards and yards of pleated trim in varying widths just adds more then wow, to this gown. I don't want to make it again, but I'm glad I did this one. A french fashion design from the 1800's and what would have been called a morning gown {believe it or not}.

This little set of yellow print trimned with yellow ribbon, pink ribbon flowers, and a lovely yellow trim makes this set perfect for Easter. She evens carries her little purse. Isn't she cute?

This set of pink stripes and a cute little print of tiny pink mice is just perfect for our little kitty. Her dress and cap is a matching set to the coveralls and blouse below. One for play and one for show.

This will complete the wardrobe for my little kitty cat for now as her trunk is full and over flowing. She has more then enough to wear for the coming year, don't you think?

I have been so busy I have not had to time to put the pictures up of my kitty's new outfits. Here is a pair pants and a top made from 2 cotton prints. I think she's ready to go outside, if only it was a bit warmer.

This cute little dress is made of a darling green cotton print that reminds me of a garden. The dress and matching panties while simple, is so sweet she looks just wonderful in it.

This isn't your alice blue gown but it reminds me of it, with the white print on white organdy pinafore, over a blue dot and stripe cotton print dress. Complete with a sweet little hat and panties, she's ready for anything the looking glass throws at her.

Mint green linned with a simple print, this little hat and coat matches the dress and panties. Mint green is a change for this kitty but I think she likes it.

This sweet little pink and print dress has short sleeves and a matching hat and panties, The dress and hat is trimmed with a tiny pink trim. Keeping things like the fabric print, the size of the panties, the size of the trim small, has helped to make this outfit perfect for this little kitten. Small goes with small, as big calls for something big. I think she is perfect in this outfit, and really sets off her blond fur with that shade of pink.

This little purple dress has bell shaped Gibson type sleeves, with a full skirt and plain bodice. Over this is a embroidery white pinafore ah la Alice in Wonderland style. Another sweet little dress for the kitty to wear outside to play. And Daffidill loves playing outside, weather it's chasing butterflys, or digging in the dirt for mice holes, she has a lot of fun and often comes in dirty, so the pinifore should help to keep her little purple dress clean.

This cute little blue dress is a simple design with pin tucks at the bodice {which allow the skirt to remain full} and short sleeves. A darker blue collar and sleeve bands match the trim and ribbons on the bonnet.

The blue braded trim trails around the bottom edge of the skirt, and covers the ribbon on the bonnet. Ahhhh, her blue eyes just seem to sparkle, and she seems to smile at wearing this cute little dress and bonnet. Of course she has matching panties. Good thing the panties open in the back or there would be no end of problems, trying to get the tail through a hole of any sort.

There is nothing like a pretty bright yellow to lift ones spirits in the dead of winter. This darling little dress has short sleeves and is made from a pretty little print of yellow stripe with tiny roses printed on it. It pairs well with the bright yellow knit of the coat and hat.

The dress is trimmed out with a ecru lace and a blue braid. The coat has the same braid and the addition of tiny little embroidered red roses. I think she looks so sweet, nobody will be able to resist her in this charming dress, coat and hat.

As with most of her outfits she wears matching panties of the same fabric as the dress. One would think she is sunshine seeing her in this outfit.

The perfect set for winter

This fabric has tiny white unicorns printed on it, with pink bows. The pink ribbons and white fleece make a perfect match to the designs in the printing of the fabric. Her little hat and capelet are tied with pink satin ribbon, and made of fleece for a warm trip outside in the winter snow. The white fleece also trims the bottom and neckline of the long dress. The dress has long sleeves that are gathered at the wrists with elastic. There is a pink satin ribbon tied at the high waistline.

She also wears pretty bloomers of a fabric with a different print. This fabric faces the hat and capelet and is printed with a blue ribbon design.

This dress is a simple one with tiny tucks at the neckline, leaving the fullness in the lower skirt area.

This little kitten wears a soft cotton nightgown with tiny little letters sprinkled over the white background. It's a simple design with pin tucks at the neckline, front and back. The sleeves have elastic to gather them in place.

The sweet little blue housecoat is for the morning when it's to cold to run about in just your fur. It's trimmed with a collar of the same fabric as the nightgown. It also sports a little teddy bear with a blue bow. And tiny little blue birds {and what else would a kitten of distinction be wearing?} resting over the snap closures. A trimmed belt will help to hold the house coat in place when scampering about after a ball or a pretend real mouse.

This little kitten will sleep snug, knowing she is in the best of stylish nightwear.

Sometimes we find something that is just so cute, you can't help yourself. You just have to have one and then.... You want to play. And dress. and take pictures, and, and, and....

That is the case with Daffodil. My newest little kitten. The cutest little yellow tiger kitten, I've seen in a long time. She has a long fluffy tail, and a long fluffy mane of blond hair. She arrived in a little pink T-shirt, and diapers. She even was wearing tiny little white baby booties, and socks. Tiny little bells attached to them, just really makes it even cuter. And she has blue eyes, that seem to follow you.

Daffodil is a resin and cloth kitten from Collectables Today. The first one of a whole line of kittens, soon to be living at my house. I believe the litter is of six different ones. I fell in love with them the minuet I saw them on line and decided they were going to be my late Christmas present to myself {as I didn't have Christmas of any kind at all}.

So the first in line was the yellow tiger, and the name Daffodil has stuck to her. I am quite sure she will also have a whole wardrobe of clothes, as will her sisters. I am thinking of the three little kittens who lost their mittens. They wore the prettiest little dresses with pinafores.

I will be taking the time to make Daffodil something new, and add to her wardrobe. What can I say, I just can't help it. After all..... the cat made me do it. {G}

Connect the Dots

This gown may be used for visiting, or shopping, and even just staying at home.

The two layer lace ruffle on the skirt is made up on a white organza, and is two and a half inches wide. Making it at the limit for this size doll {too large or two small will throw everything off completely, and just plain doesn't look right}.

I choose a powder blue silky fabric with tiny white dots. It is lined with a matching blue lining fabric. The points on the skirt, and the bodice are trimmed with a tiny 1/8 inch white satin ribbon.

The fichu is trimmed the same way but a narrow white lace is added around the edge. Her false sleeves are of the same lace as the skirt. She wears her hoop under this one as is proper.

She wears a white bonnet trimmed out with feathers and loops of a wide white satin ribbon. There is one row of white lace that is a match to what is on her skirt, around the inside of the brim.

I like this one very much, even though it is of a simpler design. Not all ones finery need be made of silk and satin, but still look like the very best quality. Simple summer dresses of fine lawn or voile look ever bit as good as a silk gown. This pattern could be made up in lawn and look wonderful.

a Golden Ball Gown

This gown is of a very different design. One you would not often see. The full skirt has a tulle puffs at the bottom and then a flair over the top to the waistband. The bodice has no sleeves, and a trim of lace around the pointed bottom. The Coatee is made of a very special silk fabric I picked up while in Ireland. The front has a fold back collar, trimned in a pretty yellow lace. It also has short puffy sleeves. At waist level in the back there is a wired ribbon bow. Although different, one cannot stop looking at it. And I am sure she will be Cinderella at the ball.

Fashion and a doll

She even has her own French Fashion doll. Often times these little ladies did have their own dolls as well as lots of other wonderful things.

This dress and hat was made for walking and visiting. A brown print skirt with a light pink voile overskirt. The bodice extends down the back into another drape. The front is decorated with picot edged ribbon done in a military style across the front of the bodice. There is also cuffs of the brown print at the wrists. Both drapes are also decorated with the picot ribbon.

Her pert little hat has pink feathers and a fluff of picot edged ribbon for decoration. It is held in place with two pink pearl headed hat pins. Isn't she pretty? Perfect coloring for a blond.

But what blond didn't look pretty in pink?

A Dress of a Different Color

And shape. This dress has a train, even though it's made of a cotton print and some unusual fabric that is a deep green crinkle see though. The colors of the deep green ruffle and the lighter green lace ruffle match the print of the bodice and skirt. I need to complete a bustle to go under this dress. The design is perfect French Fashion, and enhances the look and ideal of what she is. There will be several fashion design changes that my doll will have to wear, as she would have had more then one period to draw from. There is nothing like lots of lace to just shout the title French Fashion.

Stay at home or visiting

This is style.

A cotton print, with green ruffle trimming, and yards of lace. Ecru bows trim down the front over the lace and trim. This skirt and bodice is worn over the every present hoop skirt. The bodice is lined with the green fabric used for ruffles.

A green straw hat and a lace shawl has joined this ensemble. It takes quite a bit more time to complete one of these outfits, but she never looked prettier.

The ecru lace sets off the green of the lining perfectly. These gowns are quite a bit more elaborate then any other I've worked on and take quite a bit more time. So. please bare with me as I construct her wardrobe. The wait will be worth it.

Miles of Ruffles

It was all the ruffles that told everyone you had money and standing. It cost a lot for the ruffles on a skirt, so only those who could afford them were able to have as many layers.

My French Fashion lady has 6 layers. I wonder where she got the money for that?

Her fine lawn purple plaid jacket is lined with a fine white lawn and trimmed out in a purple braid. The bows down the front were all the rage. I believe it was Worth who inspired this design and it was worn over the hoop skirt for many years. My lady has her hoop on as dictated by fashion. This skirt can be worn with any number of jackets, making it interchangeable for the first time. A forerunner of the skirt and blouse and jacket designs that came along a bit later.

She also wears false sleeves that only go to her elbow, and flare out to maxim fullness.

In all, a very worthy addition to her wardrobe.

Her first gown.

This first gown is called a visiting dress. I used some wonderful silk I've had stored for a long time just waiting for a special doll to use it for.

The trim and ribbon was also bought at the same time, to match the darker silk. I had found the matching feather later, and it works perfectly on her bonnet. The fronds have been curled to add interest and beauty.

The "blouse" part {the darker silk part of the bodice} is a "fake" front. It only covers the front part of the bodice. The rest of the bodice is complete of the lighter teal blue silk and has a wonderful flare in the back that is decorated with a loopy bow. The gathered pleats are a trim I purchased, as was the small lighter teal blue trim above the ribbon. The addition of the white "fake" sleeves under the full teal sleeve is something you will see with a lot of this era's gowns. This gown is a 1953 - 58 time period.

There is the addition of a "hoop" under the skirt to make it stand out. Most of the hoop skirt fashions are very full with yards of fabric, and lots of trimming. One cannot forget a hoop skirt when you have seen or worn one. This time frame is one of my favorites.

The teal blue brings out the beauty of this ladies blue eyes, and fair complexion.

So here is her first gown and the first of her wardrobe. I will be thinking hard on a name for my lady. In the mean time I shall begin another gown for her wardrobe

I am switching gears! I am now going to be working on a 12" French Fashion doll by Kathy Hanson. She does such fine delicate work. I love how she paints doll faces.

So, now it will be 1850s,60s, and 1870's. Perhaps a bit of the 1880s as well.

I have been wanting to do a French Fashion doll for some time, so now we go back in time to bustles, and hoops, and corsets, oh my!

Off to a formal Christmas Party

Bonnie was invited to a formal Christmas party, and needed a long dress to wear. This pretty Christmas print has been made into a long sleeve dress that reaches the floor. Then another pretty print was made into a pinafore and decorated with gold trimmings and gold bows. There is just a touch of pinstriped trimmings around neckline and armholes. A gold sash finishes off the pinafore, and she is ready to go with her matching bonnet, that is also trimmed with gold bows and trim.

Nothing could look brighter on this Christmas eve, and she is all smiles.

A new Christmas Dress for Bonnie

This dress made of cotton Christmas print is a fairly simple design. Made with a collar extending only in the front, and trimmed out with red lace and a red scallop trim. The trim is also around the bottom of the skirt. She also had a bright red sash tied in a bow in the back.

The sleeves are called a "cap" sleeve because they "cap" or cover only to top of the arm and are not gather to fit the arm. She is ready for a fun day, and lots of presents under the tree.

I have decided after a lenthy amount of time considering this, that she should be called Bonnie. I think she looks like a Bonnie, so Bonnie it is.

Winter plaid

This pair of overalls are made of a thick, woven cotton plaid fabric, with a cute little fur tree and berry design. It's trimed with the tiny green checked cotton that the short sleeve blouse is made out of. All in all, it's perfect for playing outside in the cold, with the addtion of a winter jacket.

It's also a wonderful christmas like plaid design that would lift anyones spirits this time of year.

nighty-night

She now has her night gown and house coat. The two things every doll should have. Along with under things of course. Her nightgown is made of a cotton fabric in a tan, cream and green color. A mistletoe design in a modern motif.

The house coat is made from flannel with a back woods motif. Red cardinal birds, green trees and snowflakes in a large check pattern. Now she is ready for bed and a bed time story. There is nothing better than that.
