One wears it at home.

The robe de chambre is a kind of housedress. Sort of anyway. It is worn only at home. One gets comfortable in it, and relaxes to write notes and letters, or direct the servants in what is for dinner. Charlottes robe is made of a silky fabric and trimmed with a fancy fringed embroider ribbon. Red is her color. A tasseled belt ties in front. One thing you will see a lot of in this eras fashions, are what was called a 'false sleeve'. The sleeve only reached to the elbow and is worn under the full sleeve of the bodice. One can interchange the sleeves at will. They are very full, to fill out that bodice sleeve. Here she wears ivory silk false sleeves.
